Summer Opportunities

Summer is a time for students to relax and enjoy! However, it is important for them to keep their minds and bodies active. We encourage students to engage in activities such as reading, working puzzles, playing outside and interacting with friends. Lorena ISD offers several opportunities for students. Check our links below for additional information.

LHS 9th Grader wins Student Heroes Award

Congratulations to LHS Student Cole George! He is one of 15 recipients of this year's Texas State Board of Education Student Heroes Awards.

From the SBOE press release:

"One person can make a difference and these 15 Student Heroes prove it. Their work is inspirational and uplifting," said Donna Bahorich, chair of the State Board of Education. "The State Board of Education is delighted to shine a light on these caring and compassionate students who have enriched their schools and communities."
Cole George, a ninth-grade student at Lorena High School in Lorena ISD, saw a need and decided to personally address it. While eating in the school cafeteria, he saw a special needs student whose disability affects her motor skills, making it difficult to bring her fork to her mouth. After watching her struggle, he began researching different tools that might help her. He found a battery-operated adaptive fork that bends and levels to help a struggling eater. He began doing extra chores to raise the money to buy the fork. George raised the $240 necessary to buy the fork with an additional spoon attachment for his classmate.

LHS Junior Earns Place in Summer Music Institute

Lorena High School Junior, Joel Horton has been accepted to the highly competitive Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the nationally prestigious Brevard Music Center Summer Institute in North Carolina for study during Summer 2017. After auditioning for the institutes, he was happy to learn that he had been invited to participate in both programs. Joel has decided to accept Brevard’s program where he will study under the artistic direction of acclaimed conductor Keith Lockhart, principal conductor of the Boston Pops and BBC Orchestra in London. Horton will spend six weeks studying music with artists from the nation's leading orchestras, colleges and conservatories. He is looking forward to attending master classes and private lessons with professional musicians. His audition earned him one of only two tuba spots at the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute High School program.

Horton attended Interlochen Summer Arts Camp Trombone, Tuba and Euphonium Institute in Michigan last summer with faculty and staff from all 50 states and more than 40 countries. Learning from these world-class instructors is helping him grow as a musician. He will serve the Lorena High School band as Show Drum Major for the 2017-2018 school year.
