Veterans Day at Lorena ISD

Each year, Lorena ISD campuses pause on November 11 to honor the veterans in our community for their service to our country. All local veterans and communnity members are welcome to attend any of our programs.

Lorena High School

• Place: Performing Arts Center
• Time: 9:45 am
• If you would like to honor a veteran in your family in the HS Program slideshow, email his/her name, service branch, and picture to lhsvetsday@lorenaisd.net. 

Lorena Middle School

• Place: Lorena Middle School Gym

Fish Camp (for incoming 9th graders) - August 19 from 10 am to 12 pm

Library Media Centers Offer Extended Hours

The Elementary, Middle School, and High School Campus Library Media Centers are offering extended hours this year to allow students extra access to computers and school resources.

The hours are as follows:

• Elementary - Open Mondays from 5 pm - 7 pm
• Middle School - Open Wednesdays from 5 pm - 7 pm
• High School - Open Tuesdays & Thursdays from dismissal until 6 pm

Parent Tech Academy & Kid Discovery Kamp

Lorena ISD will host a Parent Tech Academy & Kid Discovery Kamp for Elementary & Primary parents and students. The event will take place on October 21st from 6 to 8 pm at Lorena High School.  Click here to register your family for this free evening of fun and learning.

Fall Festival

The annual PTO Fall Festival will be held this year on October 4th from 6-9pm. There will be lots of games, food, and fun!!!

Lorena ISD Bond Updates

Below is a brief update on the bond construction projects for each campus.

Lorena Primary School 
• Addition of new wing to house 2nd grade and a new secured entrance
• Plans have been released for bids.
• Breaking ground for new wing: October 8, 2013
• 10 Month construction including wing and new secured entrance
• LPS will begin the 14-15 school year as a Pre-K through 2nd grade campus.

Lorena Elementary School 

• Renovations include new administrative and support areas for additional classroom space, addressing handicap accessibility as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system repairs and replacements to meet current codes and improve energy efficiency.

• New addition to provide a secured entrance and new entry design

• Tentative Dates:

• Early March 2014 – release bid documents
• Late March 2014 – bid date  
• April 2014 – Begin construction

• 4 month construction

• LES will begin the 14-15 school year as a 3rd -5th grade campus.

 

Lorena Middle School 

• Construction includes cafeteria expansion to alleviate overcrowded lunches and to serve as concession area for the gym, flooring replacements, and a new secured entrance.

• Tentative Dates:

• Early November 2013 – release bid documents
• Late November 2013 – bid date  
• December 2013 – Begin construction

• 7 month construction

• LMS will begin the 14-15 school year as a 6th -8th grade campus.

 

Lorena High School 

• Building additions for new classrooms, cafeteria, gym, athletics and support spaces that will connect all buildings under one roof, creating a more secure campus as well as library media center expansion and a new, relocated secured entrance to the building.

• Athletic stadium renovations including moving home side to visitor side, new concessions, restrooms, increased seating, press box and field and track improvements.

• Tentative Dates:

• Early March 2014 – release bid documents
• Late March 2014 – bid date  
• April 2014 – Begin construction

• 12 month construction

• All construction and renovations at Lorena High School should be complete by the beginning of the 15-16 school year.

Lorena Elementary Earns Award

 

This year the Waco Tribune-Herald once again conducted the H.O.T. Reader’s Choice Awards. Congratulations to Lorena Elementary School for being chosen as the Best Public Elementary School by readers! Be on the lookout for the Waco Tribune-Herald H.O.T. Reader’s Choice 2012 Award supplement in the paper where you will see the announcement!

Little Leopards Cheerleader Clinic

• What: Cheerleading Clinic featuring Lorena’s best!
• Who: Future Cheerleaders age 3 and up!
• When: Friday, January 27^th from 5:00 pm – 8:30pm
• Where: Lorena High School Gym
• Cost: $25.00  *Please make checks payable to LHS CHEER*
• Each participant will need to bring a sack dinner.  Drinks and snacks will be provided!
• T-shirts will be delivered to your child at school no later than Friday, February 3^rd.

  

*Check-in begins at 4:30 pm in the foyer of the Lorena High School Gymnasium.  Preregistration is encouraged!  Each participant will receive a Little Leopards cheerleading t-shirt, admittance into the Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball Games v.s. Robinson on Friday, February 3 @ 6:15/7:30 pm and will perform with the LHS Varsity Cheerleaders at half time of both games! Come meet the spirit behind the Mighty Leopards!

Celebrate Red Ribbon Week Oct. 24th - Oct.28th

Red Ribbon Week brings millions of people together to raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention and treatment services.  It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States. It is our opportunity as a school community to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education.

Johnny Can Spell Training for Parents (Kindergarten - Second Grade)

Have you ever wondered what language your child is speaking when he or she says,
"er  the /er/ of her"?  For help decoding phonograms, mark your calendar for Thursday night, October 6th!

Lorena Elementary School is proudly hosting a Johnny Can Spell training for parents. Alice Nine, author of our kindergarten through second grade phonics and spelling programs will be leading the event on October 6, 2011 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm.

What is Johnny Can Spell?
Johnny Can Spell is a systematic, explicit phonics program.  It presents the phonograms (the sound-symbol correspondences) initially in isolation but develops mastery through daily application in spelling, reading, and writing.

Learn more about phonogram sounds and daily phonics practice to help your child learn to read.

Free Community Event!

The Greater Waco Community Education Alliance is hosting a free community evening on meaningful parent involvement on Monday, October 3 at the new University High School. 

Ako Kambon is the featured speaker – he will inspire and challenge you! For more information call the Lorena ISD administration office or see the fliers on the website under “Parent Resources.”

Family Math Games Night

Tonight is the Family Math Games Night at the Lorena Elementary Cafeteria presented by the award winning teacher consultant group: box cars and one-eyed jacks!  The fun begins at 6:30!

Students will have the opportunity to practice a wide range of math skills by playing various games with cards and dice, and parents can learn many strategies to help their children strengthen math skills.  Skills that games help reinforce include: addition, substraction, probability, counting, place value, estimation, problem solving and many more!

Lorena ISD Media Centers: AR Home Connect

Lorena ISD Media Centers: AR Home Connect: Parents can now login to Accelerated Reader and view student progress. Simply click on the Parents link on the AR page on any Lorena ISD Library Media Center website. 

Parents use the same username and passwords as their students.  From here, parents can view point totals, average quiz scores, and even request to receive e-mails each time a student tests.

Lil' Leopard Football and Lil' Lady Leopard Volleyball

The Lorena Athletic Association is proud to sponsor Lil' Leopard Football and Lil' Lady Leopard Volleyball.  These organizations give boys (PreK - 4th grade) and girls (K - 4th grade) the opportunity to become a part of Lorena Leopard tradition at an early age.  Lil' Leopards and Lil' Lady Leopards receive t-shirts, get free admission to home games, and even get a special practice session with the high school athletes.  To find out more and download registration forms, please visit either the Lorena Elementary home page or the Lorena Primary home page.  Lil' Leopard Registration is due September 2nd, and Lil' Lady Leopard Registration is due September 6th.
